Product Description
Flat 6242Y twin and earth cable with two 1.5mm² copper conductors (brown and blue) and a bare 1.0mm² earth, in a grey PVC sheath. It is made to BS 6004, rated 300/500V, and sold by the metre, so you can order the length a lighting run needs.
What it is for
1.5mm² twin and earth is the usual cable for fixed lighting circuits in homes and small commercial premises, such as ceiling roses, downlights and switch drops. It is not the right size for ring-main sockets, cookers or electric showers: those circuits normally use 2.5mm², 6mm² or 10mm² cable, chosen by your electrician from the load and how the cable is installed.
Installing it
Sleeve the bare earth green/yellow wherever it is terminated. Fixed wiring should be installed and tested by a qualified electrician to BS 7671, and some work must be notified under Building Regulations Part P.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cable size do socket circuits need?
Socket circuits normally use 2.5mm² twin and earth (ring final or radial), and cookers or showers need larger cable again. This 1.5mm² cable is for lighting circuits. Your electrician sizes each circuit from its load and installation method.
Is the earth conductor the same size as the cores?
No. In 1.5mm² 6242Y cable the two insulated cores are 1.5mm² and the bare earth (circuit protective conductor) is 1.0mm². It should be sleeved green/yellow at every termination.
